The suspect earlier studies, Yagami Light was Kira, but he could not have any concrete evidence. In many situations, the entire series of light seems to be proven innocent of circumstances, but L was skeptical. If the light is turned out to be Kira, the issue would be resolved, and L was hard to let this complete and easy solution to go. Moreover, he found the light to be "too perfect" and that his age and intelligence to fit his precise perception of what appears to Kira.
